When residents at Brandon Wilde gather for a fundraising 5K run and 1K walk on May 27 to raise money for the Georgia Chapter of the Alzheimer’s Association, it will be the culmination of months of preparation and training for many participants. In addition to fundraising for an important cause, the festive fitness event, which is open to the public, is part of a national celebration of National Senior Health & Fitness Day.

Observed annually on the last Wednesday in May, National Senior Health & Fitness Day is the nation’s largest annual older adult wellness event, with more than 100,000 seniors participating in activities across the country. Brandon Wilde residents and team members’ contribution to the festivities will be a meaningful morning focused on movement, motivation, altruism, and community connection.

Some residents will even have their grandchildren participating alongside them, making the event a multigenerational celebration of health, wellness, and generosity.
The 5K Run/1K Walk for Alzheimer’s may be scheduled for 9 a.m. on May 27, but at the premier Life Plan Community in Evans, Ga., fitness and wellness are not limited to one special day each year. Every day is an opportunity for Brandon Wilde residents to stay active, engaged, and purposeful.

A Campus Built for Wellness

Situated on a scenic 114-acre campus, Brandon Wilde offers numerous ways for residents to incorporate movement into everyday life. On-campus walking trails and bike paths encourage outdoor activity, while the community’s newly renovated Wellness Center provides state-of-the-art opportunities for exercise and recreation.

Residents can take advantage of 36 hours of instructor-led classes each week, along with a wide variety of fitness amenities designed specifically to support older adults at every ability level. The fitness spaces feature Cybex equipment for cardio health and strength training, as well as HUR fitness equipment designed especially for seniors.
The Wellness Center also includes an indoor heated saltwater pool, low-impact flooring, and dedicated activity spaces for specialized classes and programs, including:

  • Pickleball
  • Ping-pong
  • Yoga
  • Tai Chi
  • TRX suspension training
  • Boxing
  • Water volleyball
  • Water aerobics

Physical wellness is just one aspect of Brandon Wilde’s broader commitment to whole-person wellness through its Eight Dimensions of Wellness philosophy. The program encourages residents to nurture not only physical health, but also emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, vocational, and environmental wellness, and take advantage of the on-campus health services.

In addition to the Annual 5K Run and 1K Walk for Alzheimer’s, the community has two other signature annual events — the on-campus Walk to End Alzheimer’s and People in Parkinson’s (P.O.P.) Walk — that combine fitness and fundraising while supporting causes that are deeply meaningful to many residents and families.

A Well-Rounded Life

Whether residents are training for the upcoming 5K, enjoying water aerobics with friends, practicing Tai Chi, or participating in an awareness-raising walk, the focus remains the same: staying active, connected, and engaged in life.

“Being physically active isn’t just about heart health — it can improve just about every aspect of seniors’ lives,” explains Senior Director of Community Life (and avid fitness enthusiast) Avery Villines. “Movement improves your mood and self-confidence. It strengthens your muscles and bones and can make you less susceptible to dangerous falls. You can use it as a way to have fun and spend time with your friends. You’ll sleep better and improve your brain health, too. You need to keep moving if you want to stay independent and have the energy you need to continue doing all the other things you enjoy.”

At Brandon Wilde, National Senior Health & Fitness Day may take place every year on the last Wednesday in May — but wellness is celebrated every single day.
